The Ultimate Driving Route: From Zakynthos Town to Vassilikos
If you want to experience the perfect mix of scenic driving and breathtaking beaches, hiring a car and heading towards the Vassilikos peninsula is an absolute must. For me, this is hands down one of the most beautiful routes on the entire island.
Route Details & Distance
- Total Distance: 16 kilometers (approx. 10 miles) from Zakynthos Town to Gerakas Beach.
- Drive Time: Around 30 to 35 minutes of pure, scenic driving.
The Drive: Green Landscapes & Ionian Views
As you leave the main town behind and head south, the scenery changes dramatically:
- Lush Greenery: The road winds through dense pine trees and beautiful, ancient olive groves.
- The Mountains: Dramatic cliffs and rocky hills rise to your right.
- Peloponnese Views: To your left, you get stunning, open views of the Ionian Sea and the Peloponnese coast in the distance.
The entire route is a pleasure to drive, with plenty of hidden side roads branching off the main path, each leading to its own uniquely beautiful beach.
The Destination: Gerakas Beach & The Sea Turtles
The drive reaches its peak at the very southern tip of the peninsula: Gerakas Beach.
- The Highlights: This is a pristine, golden-sand paradise with shallow, warm waters, perfect for a relaxing swim after your drive.
- The Turtles: Gerakas is a strictly protected nesting ground for the famous Caretta-caretta sea turtles.
- Local Tip: Because it is a protected nature reserve, there are no noisy beach bars or water sports here, making it the perfect spot to relax in nature.
